1. Increase Throttling Limits for Better Concurrency
A commonly overlooked yet highly effective way to boost performance in WCF is by increasing concurrency through throttling adjustments. If you’ve worked with WCF before, you’ve likely encountered the need to modify the default throttling settings, as these defaults are generally too low for practical use in real-world applications.
By default, WCF enforces limits to protect against denial-of-service (DOS) attacks.
With the WCF 4 release, these limits were raised to more reasonable numbers:

for your service.
2. Choosing the Right Instance Context Mode
The InstanceContextMode
is another crucial factor influencing WCF performance. You can choose PerCall, PerSession, and Singleton.
For scalability, PerCall or PerSession is recommended.
PerCall creates a new instance of your service class for each request.
For example:

In cases where heavy operations like loading reference data cannot be avoided, you should use a static variable or initialize resources outside the constructor:

Alternatively, if your service requires more complex initialization or has dependencies that must be injected, consider using a service wrapper:

For services that rely on sessions, PerSession is a good choice as it strikes a balance by maintaining an instance for each session, reducing overhead compared to PerCall.
3. Thread Pool Optimization: Increasing IO Threads
One often-overlooked performance bottleneck in WCF services is the ThreadPool. Even after setting the service to use PerCall or PerSession and adjusting throttling limits, you may still experience slow response times. This can occur if the service is queuing requests due to insufficient IO threads.
By default, WCF uses the IO threads from the .NET ThreadPool to handle requests. For each CPU core, WCF initially provides one IO thread. However, under load, the ThreadPool may delay the creation of additional threads, causing requests to queue up. You can check for this by profiling the service and looking for signs of high queuing but low CPU utilization.
To address this issue, you can increase the minimum number of IO threads in the ThreadPool using the SetMinThreads
method. This will help ensure that sufficient threads are available during peak load periods.
In .NET 3.5, a known issue prevented the ThreadPool from behaving as expected when increasing the minimum IO threads setting, but this issue has been fixed in .NET 4. If you’re using .NET 3.5, a hotfix is available (KB 976898) to resolve this limitation.
4. Considerations and Trade-offs
While increasing concurrency is a powerful performance optimization, it’s not a silver bullet. Pushing concurrency too far can introduce several problems:
- High CPU Usage: Excessive concurrent threads can max out the CPU, leading to poor responsiveness due to context switching.
- DOS Vulnerability: An attacker could exploit high concurrency to launch a denial-of-service attack.
- Memory Issues: If your service is returning large datasets or performing heavy database writes, you may run into memory limitations. Each active thread consumes memory, and if your service handles large amounts of data or objects, it could lead to an
OutOfMemoryException
.
To avoid these issues, it’s important to strike a balance between concurrency and resource utilization. Monitor your system’s performance carefully and adjust throttling, instance context modes, and thread pool settings as needed.
